FAQ 26 - When you copy data from a memory card to the x's-drive, does it automatically delete what is on the memory card after the transfer?

FAQ 1 - What is the procedure to connect the X'S-Drive to a computer?
Answer:
You simply need to connect the USB Cable to the computer and X'S-Drive - the X'S-Drive will be automatically powered on. Four "Removable Drives" will be accessible on your computer; the first 3 Removable Drives correspond to the Memory card slots (as the X'S-Drive can be used as a USB Card reader as well) and the last Removable Drive is the Internal Hard disk.

FAQ 2 - How the files transferred to the X'S-Drive are stored on its internal HD?
Answer:
You can perform Copy Transfers from any memory card to the internal 2.5 inches Hard Disk of the X'S-Drive.

Note: It is not possible to copy from the X'S-Drive Hard Disk to a memory card when used alone.
If you have performed several transfers during the day with different types of memory cards, you can connect the X'S-Drive to your computer via USB to access all the files transferred.

When you access the last Removable Drive (internal HD), you will see that you can access folders corresponding to the transfers done. Also depending on the Memory card used, the folder names will be as follows:

- CF000x for CompactFlash
- SM000x for SmartMedia
- SD000x for Secure Digital and MultiMediaCard
- MS000x for Memory Stick
(x is the number of the transfer, i.e. CF0001, CF0002, CF0003...)

FAQ 3 - How long do the Internal batteries can last before recharging and is there an external battery pack to use the X'S-Drive longer?
Answer:
When fully charged, the internal rechargeable batteries of the X'S-Drive allow to use the device for 2.5 hours. It takes 4 hours to fully recharge the batteries.
You can use the external battery pack Power Bank (Li-ion DC6V-7.2V) advertised on this site to use the X'S-Drive longer.

FAQ 4 - Is it safe to remove a memory card while files are being transferred?
Answer:
No, when the lights are flashing meaning that data transfer is in process, do not remove the memory card from the X'S-Drive as it may result in lost of file/data, or even damage the X's-drive.

FAQ 5 - For the X'S-Drive without Hard Disk, how easy can a 2.5 inches HD be installed?
Answer:
If you insert your own Hard drive into the X's drive, it will work if it has already been partitionned and formatted FAT.
Your 2.5 inches Hard drive must be 9.5mm thick - a 12mm won't fit in.
You cannot partition a HD via the xs-drive connected on the USB port.
You only can format the Hard Disk via the USB connection.

FAQ 6 - When I connect the X'S-Drive without the AC adapter to the USB port of my computer, it is powered automatically. Is the X'S-Drive powered by the USB port?
Answer:
When the X's drive is connected to your computer via USB, it won't be powered by it. Thus the batteries will be drained if you don't connect the AC adapter.
Note: When the X'S-Drive is connected to the USB port of your computer, it cannot be switched off..

FAQ 7 - What Operating Systems are supported by the x's-drive?
Answer:
The X's drive is compatible with the following O.S.:
Windows 98/98SE and Windows 2000 with a driver
Windows ME/XP, Linux Kernel 2.4 and above without any driver
Mac OS 8.6 - 9.0 with a driver
Mac OS 10.0.1 and above without driver

FAQ 8 - I get 4 Removable drives when my xs-drive is connected to my computer - what is the meaning of each of them?
Answer:
Each removable drive corresponds to the memory card slots of your x's-drive (as it can be used as a card reader) and its internal Hard Disk. Their definition is as follows:
- Removable Drive 1: MMC/SD or Memory Stick
- Removable Drive 2: CompactFlash
- Removable Drive 3: SmartMedia
- Removable Drive 4: Hard Disk

Although under Windows ME or XP you don't need to install drivers, installing from the CDRom will provide you icons for each Removable Drive to make it simple to know what each drive is.

FAQ 9 - Does the XS-Drive recognise a Hard Disk with multi-partitions?
Answer:
No, the X'S-Drive will see the first partition only of your Hard Disk.

FAQ 10 - Is there any limitation with the x's-drive?
Answer:
The limitation with the X'S-Drive is the number of transfers per type of card you can perform before emptying your Hard disk: the X'S-Drive can accept up to 9999 transfers per type of card.

For instance, your first transfer with a Compactflash card will create the directory CF0001. At the 9999th transfer from your Compactflash card to the X'S-Drive, the CF9999 directory will be created, and it is only then that no more transfer with the Compactflash card will be possible.
When the X'S-Drive is connected to the computer, you will need to copy all your transfer to a different media (i.e. Hard disk, CDRom) before being able to do some transfers again.
Otherwise, provided you still have some storage left on the HD of your xs-drive, you can rename the folders CFxxxx to be able to do some other transfers.

FAQ 11 - I cannot transfer from my memory card to the X'S-Drive - at the end of the transfer, a red LED is blinking. What is wrong?
Answer:
To fix this problem, you need to format your memory card in your digital camera prior to it use with the X'S-Drive. The memory card will work fine after.

FAQ 12 - How long does it take to transfer files from a memory card to the X'S-Drive?
Answer:
A complete transfer from a full Compactflash 128MB for instance will take 2:25 minutes approximately.
The same transfer with the X'S-Drive II VP2060 takes 2:15 minutes.

FAQ 13 - What is the purpose of the Reset button on the X'S-Drive?
Answer:
In case that the X'S-Drive hangs, you can reset it via this button - note that the data on the Hard disk will not be affected.

FAQ 14 - I use a Mac : the X'S-Drive mounts well and I have access to the Hard Disk (I bought an X'S-Drive without HD). I have a problem when to transferring from a memory card to the X'S-Drive: I get a flashing red error and the HD light also flashes.
What is the problem?

Answer:
We advise to purchase an X'S-Drive with a pre-installed HD this type of problem, but if you have installed your own Hard disk in the X'S-Drive, you need to be aware that the HD must be formatted FAT / DOS Disc.

FAQ 15 - Can I use the X'S-Drive as an external Hard Drive to do back up of the files of my computer?
Answer:
The X'S-Drive internal Hard disk, when connected to your computer, is recognised as a Removable Drive.
You have full access to its content, therefore you can use it as an external backup Hard drive - we just recommend not to use folder names like the ones of the transfers (for example CF0001).

FAQ 16 - Is it possible to transfer pictures from the X’S drive to a memory card?
Answer:
Only when the X'S-Drive is connected to your computer via USB.

FAQ 17 - Linux 2.4 does not automatically recognize my X's-Drive
Answer:
Linux uses a so-called "USB Manager", which does automatically loads kernel modules (drivers) for USB devices. It loads only drivers for devices that are present on the USB bus to reduce memory usage. Per default the USB Manager does not come with X's-Drive pre -configured. However you can easily configure the USB Manager to automatically recognize the X's-Drive yourself. Just add the following to the configuration file, usbmgr.conf(usually in /etc/usbmgr): vendor 0xd7d product 0x100 module scsi_mod, usb-storage.
This line identifies the X's-Drive and tells the USB Manager to load the SCSI as well as the USB storage module. The SCSI module is needed in order to talk to both SCSI and USB Storage devices, while the usb storage module is needed to talk to USB storage devices.

FAQ 18 - Can the data on the X's-Drive be shared in a networking environment?
Answer:
Yes, files on the X'S-Drive's HD can be shared in a networking environment, provided the host machine has the share functionality enabled for the unit.

FAQ 19 - What precautions should be taken while using the X's-Drive?
Answer:
Wait for a few seconds upon inserting and removing of the X's-Drive with your computer, so that time is given for the Operating System to recognize the X's-Drive. Avoid removing immediately after inserting the X's-Drive or performing repetitive insertions/removals.

Also perform from time to time a Scandisk on the X'S-Drive Hard Disk to detect and correct bad sectors if any.

FAQ 20 - When connected to the computer with the USB cable, it took a long time to detect the Hard Disk and when I unplugged the USB cable, the erroneous display occur?
Answer:
If the unit operated via USB with the computer while the batteries are low (LED indicator is flashing), erroneous display /operation may occur; if this happens, unplug the USB cable and press the [reset] key.

FAQ 21 - I use a Mac OS X and cannot mount the X'S-Drive - I get the error "a disk attempting to mount as unknown has failed verification or has failed to mount".
I can mount it with a MacOS 9 or Windows system. What shall I do?

Answer:
Apparently under MacOS X, the Hard disk of the X'S-Drive has to be named so that it can be mounted. By naming it XSDRIVE under a Windows system, you should be able after to mount the X'S-Drive on the MacOS X desk.

FAQ 22 - Can I use xD memory cards with the X'S-Drive?
Answer:
You can use xD memory cards through a Compactflash adapter. This accessory can be found from major digital camera retailers.

FAQ 23 - Where are the drivers for the X'S-Drive located on the CDRom?
Answer:
Please go the the directory drivers/VP-2030 and choose the subdirectory 'Windows' or 'Mac' depending on the OS you are using.

FAQ 24 - Is there any restriction on file types to be transferred from memory cards?
Answer:
The X'S-Drive allows you to copy all the files stored on your memory card to a new directory on its internal Hard disk. Therefore there is no file type support restriction.

FAQ 25 - Is there a firmware upgrade available for the X'S-Drive?
Answer:
You can upgrade the firmware of your X'S-Drive VP2030 by downloading from our "XS-Drive Site Download page" the Firmware Upgrage program.

Important Notes:
1. You need to run this program only under Windows 98/98SE or Windows 2000
2. Please uninstall the old Driver (v 1.14), and then install the new Driver v 1.19
3. Execute the Firmware update program
4. Please press Reset after the upgrade.
.

FAQ 26 - When you copy data from a memory card to the x's-drive, does it automatically delete what is on the memory card after the transfer?
Answer:
When you perform a transfer from a memory card to the X'S-Drive I or II, it copies all the data to the internal HD but it doesn't delete any file from the memory card.
You need after to delete the photos with your digital camera for instance.
